English as a Second Language (ESOL)/
English as a Foreign Language (EFL)
International Students
The College welcomes international students to help them improve their English for work
or higher education purposes. The English as a Foreign Language (EFL) coursesare internationally
recognised and are particularly suitable for individuals wishing to progress to Further or Higher
Education or medical professionals working or seeking
work within the National Health Service such as doctorsand nurses.
All learners, except some beginners, will have the
opportunity to take an examination. The College is a
centre for internationally-recognised examinations,
including Cambridge ESOL Skills for Life Entry 1 to Level 2
examinations; Cambridge First Certificate; Cambridge
Certificate in Advanced English and Cambridge Certificate
of Proficiency in English. The College also offers courses to
prepare for the British Council IELTS (International English
Language Testing System). As well as General English, we
offer ESOL for Citizenship.
Courses
The College offers part-time and full-time programmes at
six levels from Beginners to Advanced. Part-time courses
are for 5 hours a week during the day or evening. Daytime
courses generally run between 9.30am and 3.30pm while
evening courses are from 6.30pm to 9pm.
Full-time courses are for 15 hours a week, sufficient for Tier 4 General Student Visa
applications. Programmes are for 30 or 32 weeks and start in
September. However, provided a place on a suitable course is
available, learners may join at any time. Class sizes average 16.
Course Content
All English courses improve grammar, speaking, listening
and reading and writing skills. The highly-trained and
experienced staff use a wide range of learning materials
and methods, including audio-visual and ICT. All learners
have an initial assessment and interview with a member of
staff to establish their level of English. To ensure maximum
progress, this is followed by an on-course diagnostic
assessment to determine more precisely the specific
language skills needed by each learner. The class tutor and
learner then agree an individual learning plan to record
the learner’s progress.
